IBM, SuSE, and Redhat continue to dedicate serious resources to porting and maintaining Linux on the system Z (Mainframe) platform. zLinux is NOT a "me too" port of Linux. It is a complete and fully functional port of Linux. A big advantage of Linux on System z comes from zVM (IBM's virtualization layer) and the mainframe's IO Bandwidth capabilities.
IBM mainframe sales are on the rise. This is partially due to zLinux. If you use Linux in the Enterprise you would be well advised to keep appraised of zLinux to know when it might be the right solution for you.
IBM is coming to Chicago to tell us what work loads run best on zLinux with good, better and best fit examples and why.
Differences between System Z platform and Intel platform will be highlighted with special attention paid to instruction set, architecture, virtualization, and internal bandwidth.
zVM (the original virtual machine) will be compared to VMWare and other hypervisors.
High level cost comparison using the RACE methodology will be presented.
[President's Note: UniForum Chicago rarely allows vendors to speak, but this is a unique product and IBM has promised to not make it a sales presentation by having solid technical content. The presenter is not a salesman.]
