Using Version Control for System Administration

Abstract

With ever increasing demand for frequent changes that occur for system configuration files. Its necessary to archive the changes made. However, its seldom a good idea of keeping individual backup copies of these configuration files scattered on the system.

Version controls utilities (RCS & SCCS) are two useful tools that can keep a historical backup of changes made to your system. This presentation will cover:

Practical tutorials will be provided with automated scripts will also be provided. This presentation shouldn't be missed by any system administrator wishing to achieve Positive CHAOS (Computerized Harmony And Organizational Sanity).

Speaker Bios

Glenn is a member of the Customer Support staff at Alliance Systems / MDSI. Glenn has more than 6 years experience with UNIX system administration; with a strong background with internal and external support. Glenn has spoken before on very useful topics in UNIX related topics such as shell, perl, and awk programming.

In addition to his computer background, Glenn is a prominent Fastpitch Softball Umpire who has worked four national tournaments. Glenn's name is enshrined at the A.S.A Hall of Fame in recognition for working three or more national tournaments. He has the long term goal to work the Pan American and Olympics.

Take 355 to Butterfield Rd (Rt 56). Butterfield West to Lambert Rd. Lambert Rd North to 22nd St. West on 22nd St to Lot 10 entrance. South into lot 10. Park in lot 10 and walk to building K. The meeting room is 161 which is towards the East side of the building.
