Abstract

In today's world of GUI environments, character base professionalism has become a diminishing skill set. As people are more inclined to drag, drop, and click with icons and GUI menus, emphasis on traditional skill sets have diminished. This presentation is a refresher on the strengths of UNIX. To be specific, this presentation reminds of the strengths of UNIX through examining very powerful text base scripting procedures which highlight the strengths of: Metacharacter Expansion Environment SetUp Regular Expressions Taking Advantage of Coutesy Loads Directory/File Management Examining useful I/O and Command Useful Korn Shell Extensions Establishing Useful Functions and Aliases Line Processing Very useful examples will be provided which could be utilized in your UNIX environments. This includes shell and perl scripts which are useful tools for System Administrator, UNIX Users, and Customer Support. Very detailed handouts will be provided to supplement the subject matter.

Speaker Bio

Glenn is a member of the System Administration staff of Tradelink L.L.C. in downtown Chicago. Glenn has over 9 years experience with UNIX system administration; with a strong background with internal and external support. He is a sophisticated UNIX user in the areas of shell programming, and UNIX regular expression. Glenn has spoken before on very useful topics in UNIX related topics (shell, perl, and awk programming, and UNIX Security) at UniForum Chicago meetings and workshops; along with speaking at various technical conferences such as Technetron in Boston (92 & 93), MARUG in Myrtle Beach (95 and 96), and UniForum in San Francisco (97). Glenn has also had UNIX tutorials published in Access To Wang. Glenn has taught at two recently UniForum sponsored workshops: Internet Security Workshop UNIX Book Camp (Geared for beginners) Glenn is slated to teach UNIX Top Gun Class (Geared for advanced UNIX topics) in the Fall this year (2000). In addition to his computer background, Glenn is a prominent Fastpitch Softball Umpire who has worked six national tournaments. Glenn's name is enshrined on a plaque at the A.S.A Hall of Fame (Oklahoma City, OK) in recognition for working three or more national tournaments. Recently Glenn has reached the Gold Level recognition for having worked three Men's major national fastpitch tournaments. Glenn's long term goal to work the Pan American or Olympics. He has also dedicated his time coaching at softball clinics for youth.

Take Butterfield West to Lambert Rd, then Lambert Rd North to 22nd St.
Turn right and look for Lot 2 or the Faculty/Staff parking lot (behind Lot 1) on the right side of 22nd St.
Walk to the SRC building, room 2800 is on the second floor near the north-west corner of the building,
upstairs from the north doors facing Lot 2.
