In this talk I will try and give you a flavor for the process and challenges involved with bringing supercomputers that rank in the top 10 in the world into production. I will give you an overview of the DOE HPC centers, why we exist and the benefit we provide, the Argonne systems themselves (unfortunately, many of the details are still under non-disclosure agreement), the project processes, how we prepare applications to take advantage of million way parallelism, and some of the challenges unique to systems of this scale.
After the meeting we generally adjourn to Cozymel's around the corner from IIT for a more informal get together and discussion.
William (Bill) E. Allcock has worked at Argonne for 15 years. He is currently the Manager of the Advanced Integration Group, which is responsible for systems software development and integrating the entire system software stack together. He has also been the Operations Director for the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, team lead for the systems and networking team, and technology coordinator for the GridFTP package in the Globus Toolkit. Prior to Argonne, Bill worked has worked as a process engineer in the paper industry, instrumentation and embedded systems developer, and Infantry Officer in the Wisconsin National Guard.
