Ruby vs. Perl
Michael H. Buselli
Abbott Laboratories
Tuesday June 11th 2002 at 7:00pm
College of DuPage Bldg M Rm 147
Abstract
Ruby is a Unix scripting language first released by Yukihiro Matsumoto
in 1995 to try and shore up some of his perceived shortcomings to the
Perl and Python scripting languages. Since then, Ruby has taken off
in much the same direction as Perl has with a growing support and
advocacy group.
In Ruby vs. Perl we will introduce the Ruby language and show why the
language does some things differently than Perl. We will also discuss
how Ruby has affected the development of Perl 6, which has
incorporated some of the new ideas that Ruby brings forth.
Speaker Bio
Michael Buselli is a Senior Unix Systems Administrator with the Global
Pharmaceuticals Research and Development Division at Abbott
Laboratories in the city of North Chicago, Illinois. Michael is
primarily responsible for several Unix services provided by his group
including systems running BIND, Sendmail, Samba, Solaris Jumpstart,
and Symantec Raptor. Michael enjoys programming in C, Korn shell,
Perl, and Ruby.
In an attempt to learn more about Unix scripting in general by taking
on a new language, Michael discovered Ruby while in a Chicago area
book store. Two books on Ruby among the Python books was all it took
to get Michael started on the path to learning this new and exciting
language.
