Under the Hood: The Architecture of Mac OS X

Abstract

The Mac OS started out as a single-user, single-tasking operating system for the world's first information appliance. It placed human factors above everything else, resulting in great advances in some areas and glaring weaknesses in others.

Mac OS X (pronounced "Ten") is the Mac OS placed upon a Mach 3 microkernal with a FreeBSD personality and a NeXT flavor. The Mac finally gets a modern memory model and supports no less than five programming models concurrently (Classic, Carbon, Cocoa, Console and Pure Java).

I'll walk you through the history of Mac OS X, from both sides of its RIG/Mach/NeXT and Apple hertitage. Along the way, I'll make fun of Apple's various attempts at implementing the next generation Mac OS, will talk a little about Mach's cool VM tricks and probably whine how X is a step backwards concerning usablity.

Speaker Bio

Jonathan 'Wolf' Rentzsch (jon@redshed.net) is the embodiment of Red Shed Software and runs a Macintosh Programming Special Interest Group in Schaumburg. In between reading and coding, he'll venture outside for a bike ride or will pontificate on various list servers about obscure topics. He encourages his competitors to purchase and mandate the use of products with the most market share.

Take 355 to Butterfield Rd (Rt 56).
Take Butterfield West to Lambert Rd, then Lambert Rd North to 22nd St.
Turn right and look for Lot 2 or the Faculty/Staff parking lot (behind Lot 1) on the right side of 22nd St.
Walk to the SRC building, room 2800 is on the second floor of the west side of the building,
upstairs from the north doors facing Lot 2.
