Abstract

Open Source software has become a significant part of all software development, but it is still difficult to find a comprehensive source for all your options. The Open Source Developer's Kit (OSDK) has been created to provide a cohesive collection of the best Open Source software available for every aspect of software development. In addition, the OSDK includes installation tips, documentation and sample code. Some of the software contained in the OSDK that we will be reviewing in detail will be:

Eclipse - IDE that is the basis for IBM's Websphere studio

NetBeans - IDE that is the basis for Sun's Forte

Apache Web Server

Tomcat Servlet Engine

Threadworks - Java Threading libraries

Other software based on time and interest

Speaker Bio

Scott is an independent consultant who has been in the industry for 14 years and has worked with varied technologies such as Java/J2EE, CORBA, Oracle, Unix/Linux, LDAP and other technologies popular during the client-server and mainframe heydays. He has worked primarily with Web based applications for the past 6 years and has recently devoted a significant amount of time to facilitating developers' usage of Open Source software.

Getting to the meeting

The next Java SIG meeting of UniForum Chicago will be:

        January 14th, 2003
	7:00pm to 9:00pm

        22nd and Lambert
        Glen Ellyn, IL 60137-6599

Take 355 to Butterfield Rd (Rt 56).
Take Butterfield West to Lambert Rd, then Lambert Rd North to Circle Drive.
Turn right and look for Lot 8 or the Faculty/Staff parking lot (just north of Lot 8).
Walk to the SRC building, and enter through the south entryway.
Room 1450 is on the first floor, accessable through the cafeteria by walking through it to the far north end.
