Take yourself back in time to the dark ages of network, hierarchical, and flat file databases. The prophets of Date and Codd came along and showed us the true light of relational algebra. But how did we build our first tribute to the light? We built them using our best understanding of the problems faced at the time; namely managing order entry, organizations, and similar data. Our relational databases have served us for decades. Now we are faced with a new kind of big problem which is widely known as "big data". The technologies developed decades ago do not match well with the new types of problems faced today. This talk will focus on the column store database, why it has emerged as an alternative to row stores, how it works, and why column stores and row stores do not replace each other.
After the meeting we generally adjourn to Cozymel's around the corner from IIT for a more informal get together and discussion.

From the East or West: From I-88 (East-West Tollway), take the Naperville Road exit. At the traffic light, turn left onto Naperville Road and continue north for 1\275 miles to Rt. 56/Butterfield Road. Turn right onto Rt. 56/Butterfield Road and proceed 1/4 mile to the first traffic light (East Loop Road).
