Hacking Internet-Enabled WiFi Thermostats

Peter Fales

Tuesday April 26th 2016 at 7:00pm
Wheaton, Cozymel's Mexican Restaurant, 311 E Loop Rd (Butterfield & E. Loop Rd), Banquet room

Our 2016 general meetings will be in a different location this year. We are trying this location. which is where we held our usual "After the Meeting" meeting in 2015. Orders for food/drink will be taken during the break in the middle of the presentation if you are hungry and don't want to wait until after the presentation (You will be expected to cover your own food/drink costs including tax). Be gracious and buy your own dinner and/or drinks, Cozymel's is letting us use the room for free so it's only right.

Abstract

This talk is about my experience converting our church HVAC systems from "dumb" programmable thermostats to "smart" Internet-Enabled thermostats. I'll talk about the reasons we switched, some of the interesting things we found, and why you might want to consider doing something similar in your own home, church, or other buildings. But I'll also show some technical details about how we used the vendor's API to add additional capabilities to customize the system for our needs, add features, and collect/analyze data.

Bio

Peter Fales has been a computer geek, (ethical) hacker, and do-it-yourself enthusiast ever since learning BASIC, assembly language, and soldering while going to high-school in the 1970s. He earned his BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1982 and his Master in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California in 1983. He recently retired from a career developing software and software tools for the telecommunication industry (AT&T, Lucent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent, and Bell Labs). His only son left for college this fall, leaving him with still more time to indulge in both technical hobbies (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, 3D-Printing, and working with open-source software) and non-technical pursuits (biking, skiing, reading, home repair projects, and volunteer work with his church and the Boy Scouts).

Getting to the meeting

The next General meeting of UniForum Chicago will be at:

        Cozymel's Mexican Restaurant
        http://www.cozymels.com/store_wheaton.htm
        311 East Loop Road
        Butterfield Rd.at E. Loop Rd.
(next to Chick-fil-A by the IIT-Rice campus)
        Wheaton, IL 60187

The previous IIT-Rice location in Wheaton we have been enjoying over the past decade is no longer what we will be using. This location was our usual "After the Meeting" meeting in 2015 where we would go after the presentation. Tonight, we are having the presentation at the same place that people can get food/drink.
