Three topics in one meeting tonight!
Pi-hole:
Pi-hole is a DNS server that protects devices from unwanted content without installing any client-side software. We will show installing it on a Raspberry Pi, setting it up, and possible configuration choices. We will then give a demo showing what some popular web pages look like with and without it.
Windows Subsystem for Linux:
This Windows 10 subsystem lets developers run a Linux environment (including most command-line tools, utilities, and applications) directly on Windows 10, unmodified, without the overhead of a virtual machine. We will cover some of the history behind it, the pros and cons of using it, and what the future for it holds. We will also give a quick demo showing an install and use.
CircuitPython:
CircuitPython is a Python interpreter that has been implemented as the firmware on some microprocessors. This allows a programmer to develop and run microprocessor applications without the need for external SDKs, compilers, etc. Scripts are run directly by the Python interpreter. We will cover the design philosophy behind it, the community that supports it, and enter and run a couple of examples (live demo!)
As our January general meeting, this will also be our Annual meeting where half of our board member slots will be up for election. Currently no one other than the current board members for those slots have asked to be on the ballot. Unless someone asks to be added to the ballot, we will ask for a voice vote to re-elect those current board members.
As usual we will be having a "Meeting After the Meeting" for talk, food, and drinks, and we are planning it to happen at the Rock Bottom restaurant in the Bolingbrook Promenade mall.
