In the first half of the talk I will describe Grid Computing, how it differs from some of the other distributed computing paradigms, where the Globus Project fits in, and then I will discuss how some large science projects like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the Earth Science Grid (ESG), and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) use Grid Computing. In the latter half, I will give a quick overview of the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, which is the large supercomputer center at Argonne, some of the science done there, and then dive into our disk and storage systems in some detail.
Once we have finished, we will adjourn to nearby Cozymel's Mexican restaurant for food and drinks.
William (Bill) Allcock is the Operations Director and the Manager, Advanced Integration Group for the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility. This includes overall responsibility for operational metrics (availability, utilization, power utilization efficiency, etc), the systems administrators, and the systems software developers. Bill also spent 6 years working on Grid computing, and was the lead for the GridFTP team, a system for secure, high speed, and reliable movement of large datasets. He has also worked as an embedded systems developer, consultant, and process engineer in the paper industry.
