Last May, our ecommerce website was taken offline by a Denial-of-Service attack. Fortunately fail2ban was installed and working on the server to dynamically block brute-force password guessing. Following the DoS attack, it is now also used to block this DoS and other persistent threats.
This presentation introduces the fail2ban intrusion prevention framework. You'll learn what it is, how it works, and how you can implement it to protect your hosts. You'll hear our denial-of-service story, and learn how we're using it everyday to protect our machines from malicious exploits.
As usual we will be having a "Meeting After the Meeting" for talk and drinks afterwards at the Gordon Biersch restaurant in the Bolingbrook Promenade outside mall. The link goes to the restaurant's Bolingbrook website with a clickable, expandable map.
David J. Young has 30 years experience as a programmer, systems, network and database administrator. He is currently the IT Director at National Cycle, a world leader in motorcycle windshield and accessories manufacturing. It is his ideal job. It combines computers and motorcycling; two of his life-long passions. When he's not on a computer, he's usually exploring a US or European twisty backroad on a motorcycle, or aggressively slicing through the trees in Michigan on a dirt bike.
Use the library's FAQ (http://www.fountaindale.org/about/faq) as a source for how to get to meeting.
