Meetings

Amateur Radio and the Internet

Dean Holste

Tuesday July 26th 2011 at 7:00pm
Wheaton, Illinois Institute of Technology - Rice Campus, Room 103

Abstract

This talk will cover two ways to use the Internet in conjunction with Amateur Radio stations. EchoLink allows licensed Amateur Radio stations to communicate with one another over the Internet, using streaming-audio technology. The program allows worldwide connections to be made between stations, or from computer to station, greatly enhancing Amateur Radio's communications capabilities. The Internet Radio Linking Project reliably and inexpensively link amateur radio systems without the use of RF links, leased lines, or satellites.

Bio

Dean Holste, whose amateur radio callsign is KC9EOQ, was first licensed as a Technician Class amateur radio operator in 2003. In 2007 Dean passed the General Class license exam in 2007 which earns a "ham radio operator" the ability to make worldwide contacts. Dean's amateur radio hobby is shared with his computer hobby. Over the years, with the development of software and use of the Internet, the two hobbies can join together at times with interesting results.
