Setup and Administration of CentOS 7

Charles Buege

April Tuesday 17th 2018 at 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Bolingbrook, Fountaindale Library, Meeting Room B

Abstract

This presentation will introduce how to install CentOS in an environment that will allow you to learn Linux without having to dedicate an entire machine to it: setup of CentOS under Virtualbox on a laptop. Charles will be showing you the benefits of Oracle's VirtualBox product including how to get it (it's free!), what to do once its installed, and how to setup and configure CentOS once VirtualBox is installed.

He will go over some of the basics of how to setup the operating system, what items that Charles chooses as defaults and why; basic hardening of CentOS - restricting ports, a quick overview of firewalld (the replacement of iptables), and how to setup CentOS for remote access both via command line and via GUI (how to get VNC setup to access a CentOS GUI).

At all times during this presentation, if anyone has questions as to how to do something specific or would like to see a particular application or server installed, that will be shown if there is time. Anyone that has any specific requests for what to see during this presentation ahead of time, please feel free to comment on this event and Charles will check the comments periodically a couple days before and he will try his best to incorporate the questions into the presentation.

As usual we will be having a "Meeting After the Meeting" for talk and drinks, and we are planning it to probably happen at the Rock Bottom restaurant in the Bolingbrook Promenade mall. The link goes to the restaurant's Bolingbrook website, but if you want a direct link to a map for directions use this link.

Bio

Charles Buege has been an IT professional for over 25 years. He started doing phone tech support back in the 90's and if you were capable of talking a 70+ year old person through a Windows 95 installation without a mouse, you knew what you were doing. Today, Charles is working as a Systems Architect/DBA for TeMeDa, LLC based out of Naperville. Working for TeMeDa, he has helped them grow a cloud infrastructure that is robust, scalable, and able to handle the processing of several million records per day. Whether it is supporting VMware servers, test/development environments, or writing web browser automation testing, Charles is finding that there is no part of IT that doesn't have some sort of appeal to him. His primary IT passions are virtualization with a strong preference for VMware, Cisco networking, Palo Alto firewalls, and Linux. Personally, he loves reading, watching TV shows and movies, and supporting his friends in the theater world by attending their shows throughout the Chicago area.
