When it comes to routing and networking, Cisco is huge, but there is a new kid on the block that has many of the features that Cisco has for a fraction of the price. This is not something that the mid-size businesses have taken advantage of, but you can inexpensively build yourself some fully redundant machines that can route, firewall, and load balance 100-400 mbps with ease, and have the potential to do much more. In this presentation Joe will show what you need to start and how to configure and implement hardware and Linux to be mid-range routers, firewalls and load balancers for a mid-size business. Cisco and others have some serious networking competition from Linux.
Joe has been working with TCP/IP and Linux for the last 17 years for companies like Sears, Advantis, IBM Global Network, AT&T, LIDP and Encyclopaedia Britannica. He has been programming mainframes, and Unix and embedded systems, along with playing system administrator for OS and hardware. Joe's experience with network communications ranges from serial to ISP to large web shop environments.
As Director of Operations and Networking Lead at Britannica, he has led the charge to replace an aging group of 7500-7700 Cisco routers, RainWall, Cisco ASA firewalls, and F5 BIG-IP equipment with off-the-shelf Tyan 1U machines running Linux for a cost savings of over $100,000 with better performance and uptime.
