Argonne National Laboratory Tour

Abstract

UniForum Chicago is going to visit Argonne National Laboratory on Tuesday, April 10th from 6:30pm to 9pm. The tour will include the Leadership Computing Facility, Advanced Photon Source, and the Nuclear Engineering Exhibit. The leadership computing facility contains the massively parallel Blue Gene supercomputer. The Advanced Photo Source produces the most brilliant X-ray beams in the western hemisphere. This tour should prove to be extremely interesting and informative.

We'll all meet at the Argonne Information/Visitor Center at 6:30pm, which is located off Northgate Road. From I-55, take exit 273A south on Cass Avenue 0.7 mi to Northgate Road (main entrance). Turn right and continue 0.7 miles to the Guard Gate and the vistor center.

There are some special requirements for admission onto the premises:

  1. To expedite entry on-site, we need to present a list of ALL names and citizenship to Argonne.
    1. Please goto the UniForum Chicago meetup page (http://www.meetup.com/UniForum-Chicago/events/55986592/) and RSVP your participation. Please enter "XXX citizen" in the comment field to indentify your citizenship. This must be done by April 9th, 2012.

    2. Additionally, if you are a Non-U.S. citizen, or legal permanent resident (green card holder) you MUST complete and submit THIS FORM no later than March 30th, 2012. There is an approval process that can take seven to ten business days. You will also need to email copies of your INS documents, such as permanent resident card or passport & visa. These documents will need to be e-mailed to patcanaday@anl.gov.

  2. All visitors will be required to present a photo ID, such as a driver's license.
  3. You will be given a visitor's pass that you'll need to prominently display while on-site.
  4. All vehicles entering the site are subject to search.
  5. Required Attire: Long pants and flat, closed-toe shoes.

Once we have finished the tour, we will adjourn to Gordon Biersch (I-355 & Boughton Rd near Bass Pro in Bolingbrook) for food and drinks for our usual After-the-Meeting meeting.

Argonne is 17 miles southeast of the IIT Rice Campus.

From IIT:
Take Butterfield Rd (Rt 56) west to Naperville Road. Turn left and take Naperville road south to I-88. Take I-88 east to I-355. Take I-355 south 7 miles to I-55. Take I-55 north 4.4 miles to Cass Rd. Exit 273A south on Cass to Northgate Road (main entrance). Turn right and continue 0.7 miles to the Guard Gate and the vistor center.

From Chicago:
Take I-55 south to Cass Rd. Exit 273A south on Cass to Northgate Road (main entrance). Turn right and continue 0.7 miles to the Guard Gate and the vistor center.
