Abstract

This event is free and open to the public. Google Maps directions to get to the meeting: https://goo.gl/HHpwGu>/.

Back in 2017 I spoke about the basics of 3D-Printing. In that talk, I gave an overview of 3D-Printing technologies, and showed you can use CAD software to create a model for an object to be printed. But at that point, I just said "and now you have an STL file that you (or someone else) can print." This time, we'll take the next steps. I'll bring my printer, and talk about some of considerations involved in buying a printer of your own. Then we will show how to "slice" your model with the appropriate parameters, create a G-code file, and send it to the printer. We will even print it before your eyes!

As usual we will be having a "Meeting After the Meeting" for talk and drinks, and we are planning it to happen at the Rock Bottom restaurant in the Bolingbrook Promenade mall. The link goes to the restaurant's Bolingbrook website, but if you want a direct link to a map for directions starting at the library use this link.

Bio

Peter Fales has been a computer geek, (ethical) hacker, and do-it-yourself enthusiast ever since learning BASIC, assembly language, and soldering, and wire wrapping to build a computer while going to high-school in the 1970s. He earned his BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1982 and his Master in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California in 1983. He retired in 2015 from a career developing software and software tools for the telecommunication industry (AT&T, Lucent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent, and Bell Labs). His only son left for college several years ago, leaving him with still more time to indulge in both technical hobbies (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, 3D-Printing, and working with open-source software) and non-technical pursuits (biking, skiing, reading, home repair projects, and volunteer work with his church and the Boy Scouts).
